Budget Airline PLAY Scraps Planned Direct Liverpool To Orlando Route
News - Travel 25-May-2022
Back in April, budget airline PLAY announced a new Liverpool to Orlando direct flight route starting in the autumn of 2022. That new route was scheduled to fly from Liverpool J. Lennon (LPL) to Orlando International Airpot (MCO) with prices starting at just £149pp.
Unfortunately, during the company's most recent earnings report, the company announced this route was being scrapped for the time being, citing increased fuel costs.
PLAY faced rising fuel prices without a hedging strategy in place. They've recently implemented such a strategy and added a fuel surcharge to tickets, helping mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. But fuel prices are clearly still causing some problems at PLAY.
"Due to the high price of fuel, PLAY has decided to change its fleet plan for summer 2022, and instead of leasing an Airbus A321neoLR, PLAY will lease an Airbus A320neo at more favorable terms, thus securing an even lower cost base in the long term," PLAY's quarterly update says.
"As a result, the planned three times weekly Orlando service that was supposed to start on September 30, 2022, will not commence. "
It's unclear at this stage whether they still intend to launch this route in the future, but for now it's been shelved. Thanks to Alex. M. for the heads up.
