Disney Scraps $1 Billion Florida Investment Amid Ron DeSantis Feud
News - WDC 18-May-2023
Since Disney opposed the same-sex education bill (nicknamed "Don't Say Gay") that was introduced in the state of Florida by Governor Ron DeSantis, the state and the company have been in an ongoing feud which is now resulting in lawsuits from both sides. In the latest development - although not specifically stated as the reason - The Walt Disney Company has announced they have scrapped (via BBC) their plans to invest nearly $1 Billion in the state of Florida. The investment would have seen about 2,000 employees (mainly imagineers) relocate to Lake Nona, near Orlando, to work movie and theme park projects, which would have boosted the local economy.
Josh D'Amaro (head of Disney's Parks, Experiences and Products) said the company's decision was the result of "considerable changes" that have taken place since it was first announced, including "new leadership and changing business conditions. This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is the right one," he said. Disney will no longer ask employees to move and will discuss next steps with those who have already done so.
