There's been no official confirmation from Disney yet, but it seems Disney Stores around the UK appear to be closing down. My local Disney store closed some years ago, and my next closest one in Cribbs Causeway Bristol closed too (to be later replaced by a pop-up one).
Local newspapers around the country are reporting that their local Disney Stores are starting to shut their doors. The Southern Daily Echo has reported the Southampton store has closed for good. Burnabynow is reporting the Burnaby mall store is due to close this summer, and the Sunderland Echo has also reported their store has closed. The list seems to go on.
A spokesperson for Marlands Shopping released the following statement.
One of the longest-serving stores in the centre, we understand this closure is part of the planned review by Disney of the number of their physical stores across Europe, following a similar review in North America, acknowledging the shift in their shopper behaviour for certain types of purchases to their online platforms.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek did say on a recent earnings call they intend to remove some physical store locations in the US and Canada, but did not specifically call out the UK. Many will be disappointed with this decision and the move to online-only. It's also strange to remove the brand from the high street and malls where people are reminded of it, as a trip into a Disney Store just makes me want to go to Disney World even more. The future of buying Disney products might be online only at shopDisney in the near future.
