Disneys Smart Move Into Automatic Ride Photo Processing

Disneys Smart Move Into Automatic Ride Photo Processing

Attraction photo technology has enhanced greatly over the past 10 years. Gone are the days where you would queue up after an attraction and pay $15 to have a print of your Tower Of Terror ride photo. A massively profitable business at the time.

However, as we moved into the digital age, these prints became less and less popular. It's almost spooky walking out of Tower Of Terror and seeing the checkout areas where all the photo screens and prints were made pretty much empty. Disney knows people don't like to get prints in the parks and carry it around for it to most likely get damaged when travelling. They understand that guests prefer digital photos and then if they desire any prints, they can order some online using the digital prints when they get home.

Disney adapted well moving to digital - which created the Memory Maker brand. And now with the MagicBand, guests can exit the attraction, walk up to the screens and hold their MagicBand against it, and shortly the photo will appear on your My Disney Experience app to download and share.

Overall it is a very smooth and simple process, but it still has its issues. Thankfully, Disney do keep looking forward. With the opening of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, we've started to see attraction photos "automagically" add to your My Disney Experience app (if you're wearing a MagicBand). This method is being installed into older attractions like Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom.

This benefits both Disney and the guest.

For us guests, we get the photo put straight into the app without having to fight out way through the crowds of people. It also stops people congregating outside an attraction to get their photo. If you've been on Everest at the Animal Kingdom, you know what I'm talking about.

For Disney, they sell more digital downloads and/or Memory Maker packages. Although the Memory maker is usually included in our Disney World UK tickets, it isn't for everyone. Whether you have Memory Maker or not, your photo will appear on your Disney Photopass in the My Disney Experience app, and you'll get notified when it's there. You'll be able to view, and hopefully like it enough to purchase the digital download, or the Memory Maker package. The days of people taking photos of their attraction photos with their phone will be over because the only way to view the photo is through the app, because they're no longer displayed on the attraction screens.

Going forward, photographs of your time at Disney will become seamless and you'll take for granted how easy it is to view and share your photos as you'll forget what it was like to queue up after an attraction you already queued for to pay for a physical print.
