For those who have been to Orlando in the last few years, you might have noticed that Orlando International Airport (MCO) had a lot of construction going on. That's because they're building a whole new terminal! The opening date for this terminal (via Orlando Sentinel) has been announced.
The new $3 billion terminal will start welcoming passengers in July 2022.
Coming July 2022 for the airport authority is the opening of its $3 billion terminal, which has a significantly different design than the original terminal. The new building will funnel arriving passengers and baggage to the top floor, rather than to a lower floor as is the conventional approach at airports.
The upper floor is enveloped with walls and a ceiling of windows to greet passengers with views of the Central Florida sky, surrounding lakes and landscaping. But that design requires sophisticated baggage handling, utilizing high-speed trays rather than conveyor belts that carry luggage at the original terminal.
Brown urged members of the airport authority to open the terminal with a soft launch before celebrating the new terminal with a grand opening.
The airport has rebounded swiftly from the aviation collapse triggered by the pandemic. Brown said the airport is handling passengers now at a rate of 36 million annually, which far exceeds projections last year that 2021 would see 20 million passengers.
It's unclear if any UK airlines will use this new terminal yet.
