Universal Orlando Announces 4th Theme Park
Will this accelerate Disneys plans to open a 5th gate? Universal Orlando announces a fourth gate theme park coming in the future.
Chairman and CEO of Comcast (owner of Universal Studios Orlando) announced 4th theme park (3rd if you don't count Volcano Bay as an actual theme park), currently named EPIC UNIVERSE. Although no details of an opening date or themes have been announced, it's been rumoured for some time Universal is looking to expand due to the company buying up land in Orlando.
The new park will be located around 15 minutes away.
Disney has been rumoured to be planning its 5th theme park (sometimes referred to as "5th gate") for many, many years now. Disney's most recent theme park is Animal Kingdom, which opened in 1998, and reportedly cost $800million to build. That was 20+ years ago. With the reported price tag for the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansion at Hollywood Studios being $1 billion+, you can only image what it would cost to build a whole new park today. With crowds (and company profits) being at an all time high, Disney fans are looking for Disney to announce its 5th theme park to help spread crowds out rather than just building more and more hotels. We'll have to see how Disney responds to Universal's new theme park in the years to come.
