British Airways May Not Reopen Gatwick After Pandemic Passes
BA might stop flying from Gatwick airport indefinitely even after the Coronavirus pandemic has ended.
The BBC is reporting that a memo written by the head of BA's Gatwick hub explained that British Airways' Gatwick airport operation may not reopen after the coronavirus pandemic passes.
BA's Gatwick operation, which is currently suspended, is about 1/5 as big as its Heathrow hub. However, it's the primary airport for BA Orlando flights. It's unclear whether BA might stop operating at Gatwick and cancel their routes, or move the routes to Heathrow or other airports.
No official announcement has been made, so it's not definite this will happen, however, the company will be planning for every eventuality during and post pandemic.
The airline's parent company, IAG, said it needed to impose a "restructuring and redundancy programme" until demand for air travel returns to 2019 levels.
