Why Orlando Car Hire Prices Are So Expensive

For many people planning their 2022 Florida and Walt Disney World holidays, they're being completely taken back by the price of car hire in Orlando at the moment. Personally, I never hire a car anyway - I'm more of a taxi guy - but for many people I know it's their preferred method of transportation while on holiday.

The reason for the high car hire prices is primarily due to the effects of the pandemic. With worldwide shutdowns, car hire companies sold off a lot of their fleet to stay afloat, and with the ongoing chip shortages (which again has also been partially negatively affected by the pandemic) the wait time for new cars has almost doubled. Here in the UK, it's a 6+ month wait for a new car. With all these car hire companies looking to replenish their fleets all at once, demand is outstripping supply, thus the increase in prices.

Some visitors are just swallowing the increased car hire pricing and paying up, but the increased cost is out of reach for many planning their Florida holiday. With chip shortages reporting to be an issue until mid-2022, it's unlikely things will stabilise until we're well into 2023. If you're going in 2022 and not sure what to do, the only advice I can give is keep on the lookout for deals with companies like Europcar, Alamo, and Holiday Autos. If there are no cars available at a price you're happy with, you will probably save some money to use Uber, Lyft or taxis while you're on holiday. As I said earlier, taxis are my preferred method of transport, and using Mears (Orlando's primary taxi company), Uber, or Lyft is just a click away on your app.
