The EU has published new updates around the timeline for the modernisation of their border control systems. The new Entry/Exit System (EES) will start on October 12th, 2025. European countries using the EES will introduce the system gradually at their external borders starting in October with a completion date set for April 2026. The EU will start collecting biometric data of all travellers, including facial imagery and fingerprints. The EU says this will make border checks more efficient, gradually improving the experience for travellers. It will combat identity fraud, help combat terrorism and serious organised crime by acting as an identity verification tool.
It will also speed up passport control queues because this new system removes the need to have your passport stamped (unless exceptions apply). Until the EES is implemented at your chosen airport, passport stamping will still be required.
ETIAS Progress
For the Brits who enjoy visiting Disneyland Paris, the EU is planning to introduce ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) - an EU version of the USA's ESTA, which was originally slated to be launched in 2023, but is now delayed until late 2026. The fee for an ETIAS - which is required for all non-visa, non-EU travellers aged 18 and over - is now set to debut at €20 rather than the previously announced €7.
