What Is Happening To Space Mountain At Disneyland Paris

Space Mountain first opened in Discoveryland back in 1995 as Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune, a launched coaster themed around Jules Verne's novel From the Earth to the Moon. It sent guests hurtling out of a 22 metre long Columbiad Cannon on a retro-futuristic trip into space.

That original version didn't last forever. It became Space Mountain: Mission 2 in 2005, then in 2017 the whole attraction was reimagined as Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, sending guests on a secret mission for the Rebel Alliance instead of a trip to the Moon. Disney has now confirmed it's going back. Walt Disney Imagineering Paris is designing a new version of the ride that returns to the 1995 concept, shifting the story to focus on an idealised early era of Moon travel told in the steampunk style of Discoveryland.

When Does Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain Close At Disneyland Paris

What Will The New Space Mountain Look Like

Beyond the ride's indoor sets and effects, Imagineers are reworking the queue so guests can once again watch the trains in motion as they wait, something that was lost when the attraction became Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain. Steve Bramson's original score, which set the pace of the ride back in 1995, is being remastered and will sit alongside more than thirty years of technical upgrades including the exterior dome lighting installed in 2025.

"When Space Mountain first opened in 1995, it set a new standard as one of the most groundbreaking and immersive roller coasters across all Disney Parks. Today, as Imagineers, it is both an honor and an exciting challenge to reimagine this iconic attraction for a new generation. While staying true to the spirit and legacy of the original voyage, this new version will make use of all the innovations and cutting-edge technology introduced over the years in the attraction, to deliver an even more exciting experience for our guests."

  • Trips booked for late 2027 could land during the closure window, so it's worth checking for updates nearer the time before finalising dates.
