Disney Scraps The Play Disney Parks App After 8 Years

Disney has discontinued the Play Disney Parks app, removing it from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store from 16th September 2026. The free companion app, which powered in-queue games and trivia at Walt Disney World and Disneyland since 2018, no longer works.

What Is Happening To The Play Disney Parks App

Anyone who opened the app in the run up to its closure would have been greeted with a farewell message.

"The Play Disney Parks App will no longer be available starting September 16, 2026. We hope you've enjoyed the games, trivia and in-park adventures along the way. Thank you for playing!"

From that date the app came off both the Apple App Store and Google Play stores, so it can no longer be downloaded. Anyone with the app already on their phone lost the ability to log in from that point too, along with any achievements and saved progress attached to their account. Disney has not given a reason for the closure, though the timing lines up with a general move away from standalone gamified apps in favour of folding features into the main My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

How Long Was The Play Disney Parks App Available

Play Disney Parks first became available to download on 28th June 2018, arriving around the same time as Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The app was built to turn queue time into something more interactive, letting guests trigger trivia, mini games and hidden effects at select attractions across Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California. It later expanded to become one of the main interactive layers of Star Wars Galaxy's Edge when that land opened in 2019.

Eight years on, that run has come to an end. The app never expanded beyond the two American resorts, and it was never available for Disneyland Paris.

What Happens To Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Games Now

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge leaned on Play Disney Parks more than almost any other part of either resort. The app's Star Wars Datapad feature let guests scan cargo, translate the fictional Aurebesh language and interact with droids and control panels around Black Spire Outpost. That feature has ended along with the app, and Disney has not announced a replacement for it.

There's better news for Batuu Bounty Hunters. Disney has confirmed that this interactive bounty hunting experience continues to work, but now runs through MagicBand+ and the existing screens dotted around the land rather than through the app itself. If you're not familiar with it, MagicBand+ is Disney's wearable band that uses lights and vibrations to react to certain moments around the parks, and it's sold separately as an add-on rather than included with your ticket.

Does This Affect Disneyland Paris

No. This is a change limited entirely to Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California. Disneyland Paris runs its own separate app, called simply Disneyland Paris, which handles your tickets, Disney Premier Access, dining reservations and hotel check-in for guests staying on site. It has never offered the queue games or trivia found in Play Disney Parks, so there's nothing changing on that front if you're planning a Disneyland Paris trip rather than a Florida one.

What Should I Do Now The App Has Closed

1. Delete the app from your phone. It no longer connects to Disney's servers, so there's little reason to keep it installed once you know it won't log in.
2. Make sure My Disney Experience or the Disneyland app is up to date. These remain the main planning apps for tickets, Lightning Lane and dining, and were never affected by this change.
3. Bring your MagicBand+ for Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. The Datapad interactions are gone, and Batuu Bounty Hunters now needs MagicBand+ rather than a phone.

What Does This Mean For My Trip Planning

Here's how this changes a Walt Disney World or Disneyland visit going forward.

• Queue time at popular attractions loses one of its digital distractions, so pack your own entertainment for longer waits.
• Star Wars Galaxy's Edge feels slightly less interactive with the Datapad gone, though Batuu Bounty Hunters remains playable for MagicBand+ owners.
• Families chasing the Fab 50 gold statue quest can no longer track their progress digitally, even though the statues themselves are staying in place.
• Nothing about your Disneyland Paris planning changes because of this, since it's a completely separate app and resort.
