Villains Land Magic Kingdom: Quick Navigation

Where Will Villains Land Be Built In Magic Kingdom?

Disney has said Villains Land is being built in the area beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, in what's generally referred to as the northwest corner of Magic Kingdom. It's part of the wider "Beyond Big Thunder" expansion that Disney first teased years ago, and Imagineering has compared its eventual scale to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge over at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Construction has been visible from various vantage points around the park for a while now, though the recent reveal was the first time Disney put a name and story to what's been going up behind those hoardings.

What Rides Will Villains Land Have?

Two headline attractions were confirmed, both first teased back at D23 2024 but only properly detailed this week.

The Maleficent Coaster

The first ride is a roller coaster that takes riders through the enchanted briar surrounding Maleficent's mountaintop fortress. Imagineering said the coaster will include elements it hasn't attempted on a ride before.

The Magic Mirror Dark Ride

The second is a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror, found in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen's palace. Guests are transported into the Mirror Realm, where a combination of special effects and physical sets bring a wider cast of Disney Villains to life. It's a format that leans closer to something like the Haunted Mansion in structure than a thrill ride.

Which Disney Villains Feature In Villains Land?

Alongside Maleficent and the Evil Queen, Disney has confirmed Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians and Dr Facilier from The Princess and the Frog will feature in the land. More villains are expected to appear across the land's shops, restaurants and lairs, though Disney hasn't named every character yet.

What Is The Story Behind Villains Land?

The land's story centres on a Wishing Well that's been torn apart. Under normal circumstances a Wishing Well represents good, pure magic, but this one was corrupted after someone made an extremely evil wish there, cracking the stone and spreading dark magic through the surrounding forest. Various Disney Villains have since been drawn to the site, each building their own lair to try and claim what's left of the Well's power.

"Villains Land is such an exciting addition to the Magic Kingdom, because it allows us to expand the park's storytelling in a way that feels both fresh and true to its legacy and fairytale roots."

- Caroline May, Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, D23 2026

Imagineering has also given a name to the visual style running through the land, calling it "Conjured Architecture." The team said the look was partly inspired by research trips to Paris and Barcelona, where Art Nouveau and Modernisme buildings influenced the swirling patterns and rich colour palettes now shaping Villains Land's various lairs.

When Will Villains Land Open At Magic Kingdom?

Disney hasn't given an opening date. Villains Land was first announced back at D23 2024, so this is already a multi-year project, and given the scale being compared to Galaxy's Edge, I wouldn't expect doors to open in 2027 or 2028, maybe not even 2029, but that's my own estimate based on how similarly-sized lands have taken shape in the past and the amount of detail that Disney say they are putting into this land.

What Does This Mean For Your Walt Disney World Holiday?

With no opening date, there's no reason to delay a Walt Disney World trip you're already planning on the off chance Villains Land turns up sooner than expected.

  • Expect construction walls and some altered sightlines near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for the foreseeable future.
  • Ride wait times elsewhere in Magic Kingdom shouldn't be affected by this specific announcement, since nothing is closing because of it.
  • Don't expect to experience this new land or make plans for it until the end of the decade.
