Steakhouse 71 At Disney's Contemporary Resort Review
Review - WDW 04-Nov-2022
Before spending an evening at the Magic Kingdom, we travelled to Disney's Contemporary Resort to eat at Steakhouse 71. In summary:
❌ No bread service. An unwelcome start at a restaurant at this price point
✅ The “bacon & eggs” starter was probably one of the most delicious things that I ever put in my mouth
👍 Filet and Prime rib were good. Nothing to shout about, but a solid meal!
✅ Our server Ali was a laugh and very attentive
To check in you walk through what feels like a corridor ripped from a cruise ship, but it's all super clean and new.
The restaurant overall had a nice feel to it. It was calming, quiet, relaxing, and cosy. We made our drinks order and waited eagerly to see what the bread service offering was here, and alas, there isn't one.
While there were a few good options for starters, we both settled on the "Bacon & Egg". Which is Maple-lacquered Pork Belly, Smoked Cheese Grits, and a Perfect Egg. And oh boy, we're glad we did! It's funny, when one of the cast members came over with our two plates of "Bacon & Egg" she asked who they were for. I looked a bit confused as I told her "Umm one each?" she looked a little bit surprised when she said "have you had this before?" I said "no, it's our first time" to which she replied, "you'll love these then, guests usually order two each". We sort of looked at each other a bit bewildered as we tucked into our dish.
This was hands down the best starter I've had in my life. I would go far as to say it could be the best dish of anything I've had in my life. It cannot be understated how good this was. I don't know what it was, but the combination of flavours from the beautifully cooked pork belly, the sauce, and that - as correctly named - perfect egg on grits was just utter perfection.
For mains, we had a 6-oz Filet Mignon and the 12-oz Roasted Prime Rib & Classic Yorkshire Pudding. Being as British as we are, the chance to try an American Yorkshire pudding was something we just had to do. In summary, it was a good Yorkshire.
Both meals were good. Perhaps a touch too much salt (once again) for my taste (but nowhere near the amount of salt Flying Fish put on their steaks). There was nothing overly amazing about these steaks, but there was also nothing bad to say about them. I think the massive high of that starter sort of set a high expectation for the mains that it didn't quite meet.
In summary, we probably wouldn't eat at the restaurant again, but we would still overall recommend it. The lack of bread service was very noticeable after all our meals previously offering one. However, because the Steakhouse 71 lounge offers some of the food the restaurant serves, we will 100% be going to the Steakhouse 71 lounge next time and ordering a few "Bacon & Egg" with some cocktails because it's worth a trip there just for that.
