UK visitors can go to Walt Disney World without a visa for holidays of up to 90 days, as long as every traveller, including children and infants, has an approved ESTA before flying (or already holds a valid US visa). An ESTA costs $40.27 per person (about £31), lasts two years or until your passport expires, and is best applied for before you book flights or a holiday.

Do UK Visitors Need A Visa For Walt Disney World?

UK visitors need an approved ESTA to holiday at Walt Disney World, which takes the place of a full US visa for trips of up to 90 days. The UK is part of the US Visa Waiver Programme, and the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) is how that programme vets visitors before they travel. You fill in an online form, the US government runs a background check, and most applications come back approved within minutes, although it can take up to 72 hours.

Going to the US to work or study, or staying longer than 90 days, needs a visa instead.

The fee is $40.27 per person, which works out at about £31 at an exchange rate of $1.30 to the pound. Babies pay the same as adults, so a family of four is looking at $161.08, or about £124, before a single park ticket has been bought. An approved ESTA lasts for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers as many trips as you like in that time.

Your airline checks your ESTA status before you board, whether you're flying Virgin Atlantic into Orlando International or TUI into Melbourne. Keep in mind that an approved ESTA lets you board the flight, and the final decision on letting you into the country is made by the US Customs and Border Protection officer when you land.

Your UK passport only needs to be valid for the length of your stay, according to the UK government's USA entry requirements, so there's no need for the extra six months of validity some countries ask for.

Where Do I Apply For An ESTA?

Apply on the official US government website at esta.cbp.dhs.gov and nowhere else. Sponsored results from third-party companies regularly appear above the official site when you search for "ESTA", and while these companies will process your application, they charge extra for typing your details into the same government form you could fill in yourself in about 20 minutes. You never know what these third-party providers will do with your sensitive personal data.

Walt Disney World also has its own travel requirements page for UK citizens, which sends you to the same official ESTA site for the application.

How Do I Apply For An ESTA From The UK?

Every traveller needs their own ESTA, so you'll go through these details for each person in your party, children included.

1. Get your details together. You'll need each traveller's passport, an email address, a debit or credit card, an emergency contact, and your employer's details if you're working.
2. Go to the official website. Head to esta.cbp.dhs.gov and start a new application.
3. Enter your passport details and photo. Type in your passport information exactly as it appears in the passport and add a photo when asked.
4. Fill in your contact and travel details. This covers your address, employment and where you'll be staying in the US, which can be your hotel.
5. Answer the eligibility questions honestly. These cover criminal records, past travel and immigration history, and giving false information can get your ESTA refused.
6. Pay the $40.27 fee. Payment is taken in US dollars by card or PayPal, and your bank converts it to pounds.
7. Save your application number. You'll need it to check your status on the official site or retrieve your ESTA later.
8. Print a copy. We highly recommend you print a physical copy of your ESTA and take it with you when you travel.

Should I Get An ESTA Before Booking Flights Or A Holiday?

Yes. Denials are rare, but the reasons aren't always obvious. A criminal record can trigger one, even for an old or minor offence, and so can visiting certain countries or a change in US rules since your last trip.

If your ESTA is refused after you've paid a deposit, refunds are rarely given. Virgin Holidays, for example, doesn't include a declined visa among the reasons its terms allow for a cancellation.

Travel insurance won't necessarily help either. After an ESTA refusal, a visa becomes the only way to travel, and Staysure lists failing to get a required visa among its policy exclusions.

A visa application means paperwork and an in-person interview at a US Embassy or Consulate, which takes time. Applying for your ESTA before you book means a refusal won't cost you a holiday deposit.

To put it simply, the safest order for booking a US trip from the UK looks like this.

• Every passport in your party is valid for the whole trip, or renewed first if it isn't
• Everyone, including children, has an approved ESTA on those passports
• Your flights or package are booked once every ESTA is approved
• You've checked each ESTA is still valid shortly before you fly

Does A Previous ESTA Approval Guarantee The Next One?

No. The criteria can change between trips, so an ESTA that sailed through in 2023 tells you nothing about your next application.

Anyone who has been to Cuba since 12th January 2021, when the US designated it a State Sponsor of Terrorism, can no longer use an ESTA and needs a visa instead, according to the official ESTA FAQs. The designation was lifted in January 2025 and reinstated days later. Travel to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after 1st March 2011 also rules you out of an ESTA.

Do I Need A New ESTA If I Renew My Passport?

Yes. Your ESTA is linked to your passport number, so a new passport means a new ESTA, even if the old one had time left on it. There's no way to transfer it, and everyone who renews pays the $40.27 again.

If your passport runs out before or during your trip, renew it first and apply for the ESTA afterwards. The exception is a trip you're taking before the new passport arrives. You'll need an ESTA on your current passport for that one, and another once the new passport comes through.
