It was reported over social media in the last couple of days that close contact with characters onboard the Disney Cruise ships made an unannounced return! Following this, Disney has updated their Disney Cruise Line "Know Before You Go" page removing the section about at distance character meet and greets.
Character Experiences
Everybody knows Disney Characters love to cruise, too! Be on the look-out for many popular Disney pals throughout your voyage.

Character Interactions
Guests can enjoy some of their favorite Disney friends in new and entertaining ways! Disney Characters will be popping up for surprise appearances throughout the ship, so there will be plenty of opportunities to capture photos with your favorite pals.

Disney has also directly announced this change:
In consideration of guidance from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and due to proven success in our theme parks surrounding returning to traditional character greetings, up-close character greetings, including autographs, are now in the process of resuming across our entire Disney Cruise Line fleet!
