What Is a Disney Cruise Placeholder?
If you're new to Disney Cruise Line, the placeholder system is one of the best ways to save if you want to cruise again. While you're still onboard a Disney cruise, you can put down a $250 deposit (roughly £200) to hold a discount against a future sailing - without committing to a specific ship or date yet. You then have up to 24 months from the date you booked the placeholder to convert it into a confirmed reservation.
The deposit is fully refundable if you cancel the placeholder or don't use it within that timeframe, so there's very little downside to doing it if you think there's any chance you'll cruise again. You can book up to two staterooms per household per sailing. Historically, the standard discount for doing this has been 10% off the voyage fare. That's still the baseline for most sailings - but Disney has been gradually increasing the ceiling, and this latest expansion is worth noting.

Starting with December 2025 sailings, Disney introduced an expanded placeholder offer where select itineraries qualify for 20% or 25% off the voyage fare rather than the usual 10%. That's not a small difference - on a family cruise costing several thousand pounds, the gap between 10% and 25% is meaningful. The expanded discount has now been extended through June 2027 on a wide range of itineraries across multiple ships.
Worth adding: the discount applies to the voyage fare only. Taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities and any onboard extras are not included, and blockout dates apply.

Which Sailings Qualify?
The list of eligible sailings is extensive and covers itineraries on multiple ships running through to the end of June 2027. It includes short Bahamian cruises from Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale, Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime seasonal sailings, 7-night Caribbean itineraries, Alaskan sailings from Vancouver, Baja and Mexican Riviera cruises from San Diego, and Galveston departures with Marvel Days at Sea.

New: 10% Off Concierge Staterooms
Also new since late 2025 is the option to use a placeholder reservation to book Concierge-level staterooms and still receive a 10% discount on the voyage fare. Previously, Concierge rooms were excluded from the placeholder offer entirely, so this is a step forward if you were planning to go all-in on the top tier anyway. It applies to categories 02B and lower, and there are additional blockout dates that vary by ship.
The blockout dates for Concierge staterooms are fairly extensive on newer ships. Disney Destiny, for example, has blockouts running from December 2025 through to January 2027, which makes sense given she only launched recently and demand for the newest ship in the fleet tends to be strong enough that Disney doesn't need to discount it.
What This Means for UK Cruisers
For UK guests, the placeholder system is most useful if you're already booked on a Disney cruise and thinking about a return trip - or if you know you'll sail again within the next two years. It doesn't require you to commit to a ship or sailing date when you put the deposit down, which makes it relatively low-risk as these things go.
The key thing to understand is that you need to be onboard a Disney cruise to book a placeholder. You can't do it from home via a travel agent or directly through Disney's website. That means for first-timers the placeholder only becomes relevant from the second trip onwards - though it's worth having it in the back of your mind before you disembark.
If you're already holding a placeholder from a previous sailing, the range of itineraries now eligible for the higher discount is broader than it's ever been.
